People who endured sexual abuse by Catholic clergy have expressed renewed hope after their first meeting with Pope Leo at the Vatican.

Gemma Hickey, heading Ending Clergy Abuse, commented that the Pope's choice to meet with them so soon in his papacy sent a strong message about his dedication to tackling the issue.

Worldwide Strict Policy Pushed

The organization is advocating for a global strict approach that would defrock any priest who confesses to or is found guilty of sexually abusing a minor. This approach has been implemented in the United States.

The Pontiff acknowledged that there is "opposition in some parts of the globe" to this initiative, according to Hickey.

"Everyone was practical when we acknowledged that there is resistance," they stated.

Inherited Issue

The current pontiff, who took the role in spring, has inherited this longstanding issue that has plagued the Church for decades.

Previous efforts to address the problem included an unprecedented summit on child abuse within the institution and changes to church laws to clearly outlaw abuse.

Deeply Felt Connection

For the representative, who uses they/them pronouns, the campaign for worldwide adoption of the policy is deeply meaningful. The Canadian advocate shared they were abused by a clergy member who was later moved between various churches.

"We trust this will set the tone for his papacy, because we want to collaborate with him," they stated. "Both sides share the same goal, we seek to end clergy abuse."

Significant Encounter

Seven representatives of the coalition, which includes victims and supporters from over thirty nations, engaged with the Pontiff in his official residence.

The meeting, originally scheduled for 20 minutes, extended to a full hour, during which the Pope "primarily heard to us," according to the representative.

The Pope was characterized as "very understanding" when hearing the story of a female survivor abused at a church-run institution for native youth in Canada.

Hickey noted the Pope was "compassionate" about their personal experience and appeared "very humble, humorous, and approachable."

"Survivors have consistently sought a seat at the table and I didn't feel like he was giving us lip service," they commented. "I believed like he was sincere, practical, and receptive and eager to collaborate with us."

Canon Law Reforms

The group is advocating that revisions to church regulations will enable the adoption of the strict approach worldwide.

They have consulted specialists and gathered documents that they plan to submit to Pope Leo.

"He seemed interested in looking at it," they noted.

Accountability Emphasized

A recent church-ordered report emphasized the "importance of a efficient process for the resignation and/or removal of religious officials or personnel in cases of abuse or failure to act."

The report also pointed out that victims consistently emphasized the "urgent need for church leaders and major superiors to be made responsible for inaction and concealment."

Moving Forward

The representative revealed they told the pontiff at the beginning of their discussion: "This is as much a challenge for him to engage in a conversation as it was for us."

After the meeting, they expressed hope for future change.

"We realise it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the end of the day, coming together and establishing a connection and continuing to strengthen that bond is a move in the right direction," they stated.

They concluded that they shared with Pope Leo: "Just because it's a difficult period, I feel like we can alter how the narrative concludes - he valued that."
