British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several entry passages leading to the facility... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were part of a great many British personnel deployed over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military carried out what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
