American Attack on Caracas Stokes Fears of Future Greenland Acquisition.

The recent US-led bombardment in Venezuela and the seizure of its leader have ignited unease regarding Washington's ambitions on Greenland. Followers of the ex-president's base have allegedly set their sights on the resource-rich landmass following the events in the southern hemisphere.

Inflammatory Posts and Official Outrage

Merely hours following the initiation of the Venezuelan operation, a prominent right-wing commentator, who is married to a high-ranking White House aide, shared a suggestive map. The graphic depicted Greenland covered in the stars and stripes, with the cryptic message: "COMING."

This overt threat to annex the mineral-rich region, which is a member of the North Atlantic alliance, triggered immediate and firm condemnation from Danish officials.

"Denmark and the US are close allies and should continue to cooperate as such. US security is equally Greenland’s and Denmark’s security," stated the Danish ambassador to the United States. "Our nation and the United States work together to guarantee security in the Arctic."

The diplomat additionally pointed out that the kingdom had significantly boosted its military budget this year, earmarking a large sum expressly for Arctic and North Atlantic security. "And yes, we demand full respect for the territorial integrity of the our realm," he emphasized.

Administrative Moves and Geopolitical Goals

The situation were additionally complicated by the recent naming of a US state governor as a special envoy to Greenland. The governor had openly thanked the president, saying it was an "honour" to work in a volunteer role to "make Greenland a part of the US."

Following the events in Venezuela, this representative commended the president's actions, connecting it to the broader "war on drugs."

Since returning to office, the US president has repeatedly unnerved European allies with his expressed interest in Greenland. The territory is viewed as critically important for defence and future resource extraction. It already houses the northernmost US air base.

Refusing to Rule Out Force

In a notable media appearance, the leader refused to exclude the use of armed action to acquire Greenland. This position comes amid intensifying great-power rivalry in the Arctic. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he stated.

He characterized Greenland as having a "very small amount of people, which we’ll take care of, and we’ll cherish them... But we need that for international security."

Mounting Friction and Local Opposition

In response to this persistent "drumbeat" of threats, Denmark's security agency took the extraordinary step last month of classifying the United States as a "potential threat."

The leaders of Denmark and Greenland issued a joint and stern rebuke: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You cannot take over other countries."

Surveys in Greenland reveals a nuanced sentiment. While a vast majority of the island's inhabitants seek self-rule from Denmark, there is also scant desire to become part of the United States. The territory has had the option to declare independence for over a decade.

Analyst Assessment: A Credible Scenario?

Some analysts are increasingly reconsidering the possibility of such a action. One thinktank director specializing in military analysis admitted she had previously dismissed the sabre-rattling but was "now not so sure."

"Logistically, it would be feasible for the US to station a few hundred or a few thousand soldiers on Greenland, and it's not clear to me which power could intervene about it," she concluded.
